Dr. Larry Smith
Author · Advocate · Storyteller
I write stories that challenge assumptions about addiction and recovery — stories rooted in lived experience, hope, and the belief that truth still matters.
Welcome to Larry’s Story
For over two decades, Dr. Larry Smith has explored the human side of addiction and recovery through truth, courage, and storytelling. His books — Embracing the Journey of Recovery: From Tragedy to Triumph, Johnnie and Me: Facing the Voice of Alcohol Within, and the forthcoming 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy — shine light on what it means to find hope amid despair and integrity amid systems that too often forget compassion.
Through his writing, speaking, and advocacy, Larry works to bridge the gap between science, policy, and lived experience — inspiring honest conversations about what recovery truly means.

“An idyllic, truly Canadian upbringing devolves into unimaginable traumas that lead to alcoholism and addiction. Johnnie and Me is a memoir of innocence, pain, hope, recovery, and love.”

“[Embracing the Journey of Recovery] is a refreshing change in comparison to other recovery books that I have read, which so often deal with a simple step by step guide, ignoring the pain and agony that one must pass through in order to reach his/her goal.”

A note from Larry…
Stories change people.
They remind us who we are and what we can become.
This website brings together my work as a writer, advocate, and person in long-term recovery — to share stories that challenge assumptions, spark dialogue, and offer hope.
I don’t speak for any organization or recovery program. When I reference them in my books or articles, it’s to illuminate, not to endorse. My goal is to explore the deeper human questions behind addiction, recovery, and resilience.
Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. It’s personal, unpredictable, and deeply human. My writing — from Johnnie and Me to 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy — draws on lived experience and research to show how connection, courage, and truth can transform lives.
I believe recovery must rest on four interconnected pillars: harm reduction, treatment, law enforcement, and prevention. Harm reduction saves lives, but real recovery begins where hope and healing meet.
Through my books, essays, and public conversations, I strive to keep that dialogue alive — and to help bridge the divide between science, policy, and the human spirit.
This website isn’t medical advice; it’s an invitation — to read, to reflect, and to join a conversation about what genuine recovery can look like.
